Empowering Communities, Preserving Heritage, Protecting Nature

Atih Foundation – Strengthening Tanzania’s Cultural and Environmental Legacy

The Atih Foundation is a grassroots organization committed to preserving Tanzania’s cultural heritage, empowering local communities, and protecting its stunning natural landscapes. We believe that true conservation begins with people—by strengthening livelihoods and supporting community-led initiatives that foster sustainable change. Our mission is driven by the conviction that cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and economic resilience are deeply interconnected.

Rooted in respect for indigenous knowledge—particularly among Tanzania’s farmers and pastoralists—we work to amplify local voices, defend ancestral land rights, and promote inclusive leadership. The foundation was founded by the directors of Atih Safaris Ltd, who sought to give back to the communities and ecosystems that inspire their work. Recognizing the urgent need to safeguard both people and nature, we champion sustainable development models that help communities thrive despite climate and social challenges.

Today, the Atih Foundation serves as a bridge between local wisdom and global collaboration, partnering with village elders, grassroots leaders, and international allies. Guided by a voluntary Board of Trustees, we strive for a future where conservation uplifts both the environment and the people who depend on it. Through our programs, we aim to create lasting impact—ensuring that cultural dignity, land rights, and community well-being remain at the heart of Tanzania’s sustainable future.
